Each week we have opportunity to worship God by giving money to support kingdom life and work. As we prepare to give this week, consider the following words from Francis Chan in his book, Crazy Love. The words are from a chapter in which he describes what lukewarm Christians look like.
“Lukewarm People give money to the church as long as it doesn’t impinge on their standard of living. If they have a little extra and it is easy and safe to give, they do so. After all, God loves a cheerful giver, right?”
Prepare to give by praying about these two passages.
The first is a verse that describes David’s reaction when Araunah offered to give him something to sacrifice to God —
1 Chronicles 21:24 NLT
“But King David replied to Araunah, ‘No, I insist on buying it for the full price. I will not take what is yours and give it to the Lord. I will not present burnt offerings that have cost me nothing!'”
The second is a passage that describes the worship of a widow as she worships God, not by giving him leftovers, but money from what she had to live on.
Luke 21:1-4 MSG
“Just then he looked up and saw the rich people dropping offerings in the collection plate. Then he saw a poor widow put in two pennies. He said, ‘The plain truth is that this widow has given by far the largest offering today. All these others made offerings that they’ll never miss; she gave extravagantly what she couldn’t afford-she gave her all!'”
God our Father,
Help our love for you grow to the point that we want to give, not just money that we will never miss, but money that we “need” for something else.
Help us learn the meaning of giving to You “off the top.”
Help us learn the meaning of giving to You “sacrificially.”
Fiorgive us when we bring You gifts that cost us nothing, gifts that we will never miss, gifts that are simply a bit of our leftiovers.
Teach us, O God, to give.
In the name of Jesus, the One who gave all,
