Recently I spent some time chewing on Psalm 136. The words just came alive in my heart and helped me go deeper in my relationship with God. The God revealed in this psalm is complex and multi-dimensional. The God revealed in this psalm is worthy of my attention, admiration, and affection.
On the one hand, the psalm talks about the goodness, power, and majesty of God:
God is good.
God is the God of gods.
God does wonders.
God made the heavens and earth.
God made the sun and moon.
On the other hand, the psalm talks about the love and personal interest of God:
God rescued His people.
God delivered his people.
God remembers the needs of His people.
God gives food to every creature.
God’s love endures forever.
This psalm presents God as powerful, yet personal. Powerful enough to create the universe. Personal enough to care that creatures have something to eat. Powerful and personal enough to love with a stubborn, enduring love.
I want to know You as the powerful God of gods.
I want to know You as the creator of the universe.
And . . .
I want to know you as my deliverer.
I want to know you as my provider.
So help me, O God, to . . .
Trust Your power
Wait for your deliverance, and
Experience your love
In Jesus’ name,
