On Sunday my home church, Skyline church of Christ will have a special missions contribution. For several weeks we have prepared for this day. We have fasted and prayed, asking God to prepare us for this special day. Now the time has come for us to give.
In the last few weeks I have had several conversations with people about this special offering. Some have made sacrificial commitments. Children have collected nickels and dimes. Several have changed their holiday shopping lists to be able to give more.
Our hope is that the congregation will present $158,000 in offerings to God in this special missions contribution. The leaders are leading, having made generous pledges toward our goal.
What is most encouraging to me is that the money will not benefit us — it is to be spent on others. The money will provide medicine for a jungle village in Panama, relief for orphans in Africa, food for the hungry in our community, shelter for battered women in our area, hope for local young men in trouble, Good News for people in West Tennessee, opportunity for young people in Australia, and counseling for some of our neighbors.
I am so thankful for the time we have spent as a church developing a deeper awareness of our many blessings. We have come to realize that since we have been given so much, much is required.
May God open our hearts Sunday.
To God be the glory!
