“The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God” (Mark 1:1).
Do we catch the significance of Mark 1:1? A look at the wording suggests there seems to be a link to another 1:1.
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1).
Just as Genesis 1:1 and the story that follows records the fresh beginning of the world, Mark 1:1 and the gospel story that follows records God providing another fresh beginning. This time, God is not creating a beginning by speaking words like “Let there be light.” This time, God is creating a beginning by speaking “the Word,” Jesus.
A new beginning. A fresh start. God starting over. That’s good news. That’s gospel. And it all begins and ends with Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
Mark tells us the good news of Jesus. He presents a Jesus unleashed. A Jesus that looks very different from the one boxed and marketed by churches.
Looking for a fresh start? A new beginning?
May I suggest Jesus? Jesus unleashed!
