The Report

“For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake. You became imitators of us and of the Lord; in spite of severe suffering, you welcomed the message with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. The Lord’s message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia–your faith in God has become known everywhere. Therefore we do not need to say anything about it, for they themselves report what kind of reception you gave us. They tell how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead–Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.” (1 Thessalonians 1:4-10).

This passage really lays out what conversion is all about.

  • God’s love
  • God’s choice
  • Gospel words
  • Holy Spirit power
  • Deep convictions
  • Mentoring/modeling
  • Holy Spirit joy
  • Severe suffering
  • Message ringing-out
  • Faith spreading
  • Turning from idols
  • Serving the living God
  • Jesus’ resurrection
  • Waiting for Jesus’ return
  • Rescue by Jesus
  • Wrath escaped

Practically every phrase in this passage could inspire a season of prayer! But today I am zeroing in on the words of verse 9: “they themselves report what kind of reception you gave us.” Consider how it is rendered in the New Living Translation, “they themselves keep talking about the wonderful welcome you gave us.” Wherever people heard the story, they spread the news.

Bad news travels so quickly, especially in this day of electronic communication. I am convinced that I need to spend more time giving the kind of report outlined in this passage. I need to make opportunities to talk about how people are turning to God. I need to keep telling how God is changing lives.

Yes, the church is the home of The Good News. But the church should also be the home of good news. We must not miss the opportunity to spread the word – God is alive, the Holy Spirit is moving, and Jesus is returning.

Keep talking!
